A Hidden Discipline That Will Extend Your Mind: Develop a Personalised Learning System (PLS)
BONUS MATERIALS
Updated on 4 Jan 2024.
Since the development of Deep Learner, I've made certain changes in terms of the tech applications that I'm using.
Specifically, I no longer use SimpleNote to capture my notes. Instead, since mid-2021, I've made the shift to another free software called Obsidian.
I generally resist the urge to app-switch, but the benefit in Obsidian fare outweigh staying with SimpleNote. I've spelled out the reasons for making this switch in the videos here.
Obsidian can appear intimidating at first, but once you get going, there is something remarkable about it. I don't say this lightly, given that there was a huge app-switch cost for me due to amount of notes I have in SimpleNote.
If you are trying to not just capture notes, or what sometimes is referred to as a Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) system, but you are trying to develop a learning system (I call this a Personalised Learning System, PLS) i.e., become a Deep Learner, the main benefit of Obsidian is that you can easily link your notes. This is called bi-directional linking. You will notice that it comes with a beautiful neural-network like graph as well.
Nevertheless, the core principle of the teachings in Deep Learner is agnostic to what software you use. There are plenty in the market right now (Roam, Notion, Apple Notes). And things are likely to evolve further in the coming years. I urge you to continue to grow your garden of PLS.
If Obsidian interests you, check out the videos in this Bonus section. I wish you well in your journey as a Deep Learner.
I believe one of the most critical things you can do is to create a personalised learning system (PLS). Though the payoff is not immediate, but like growing a seed, the benefit is tremendous, especially if you value personal and professional development.
In this episode of Frontiers Radio, I take you down a road trip of my note-taking system, and why, after over 10 years, I'm now making a switch to an app call Obsidian.

Here is a timelapse animation of my 6,517 notes in Obsidian.
I've recently moved all of my notetaking from Simplenote to Obsidian. Seeing the interconnection of my notes has a profound impact and is affecting my future note-creation.
